What is aligning the names Kelly Slater, Greg Webber & Shane Herring recently? October 29, 2014 – Tags: , , , , , ,

The sport of surfing as we know it is a great one. The sport is gaining a massive following worldwide in the more recent years & a new found level of professionalism , I noticed whilst watching the Asp World Juniors last night that there was only a handful of Aussies in round 3 a few Americans plenty of Europeans & Brazilians & a field that resembled (country wise) more of a Formula one Grand Prix line up than a surf comp that we are used to. But in all honesty, that is a story for another day.
The video i have attached here is a bio of early 90’s ex Aussie surfing star Shane Herring. I found this as i read a story that swellnet posted this morning about Kelly Slater contacting Greg Webber, for some Banana Boards that Shane Herring used to ride with Kelly Saying, after watching the video, that it was the best carve surfing he has seen in 20 years. A banana board is a knifey stick with big tail lift for release, big rocker for take offs on steep waves & low rails for holding in.
Kelly Slater is apparently psyched on what he has received & with all due respect to the G.O.A.T i think it was time he moved even slightly in the other direction off the 5’4’s he has been riding to make his surfing less pivoty. What would i know though, the thing about all of this is that, Shane Herring loved banana boards over 20 years ago, Greg Webber is a rival of Kelly Slater for a new break through design, for a commercial wave pool, but is building boards for Kelly to refuel his passion for surfboard design & playing with it. Sounds like a story line for a new surf movie, but the thing i love about it all is that the man who has nothing much, if anything, to do with pro surfing anymore, is still influencing heavy weights! That is a legacy if i ever saw one. Watch the vid, say what you will about the man, but try & enjoy it for what it is, a great piece of feel good nostalgia & some great knowledge if you new nothing about the Dee Why Ex pro.
