The best surfer in the world for the next 5 or 10 minutes November 13, 2014 – Tags: , , , , ,

I have to say, last night, after seeing yet another surf publication, claim another, watch this clip, this guy is the world’s best at the moment call, i thought ok, is this a repetitive , bad attempt at getting readers, or in this day n age, clicks. Now i can’t claim to have writing skills like the surf journo’s & i am positive i have a lot worse grammar, but that is my point, these guys should be a bit more creative. Big calls with an arguable amount of weight behind them are very see through very quickly.
Now, is everyone claiming these things because there is not enough to write about or is it a case of sour grapes. I have to say, that i have not seen one of these publications, claim the Gabriel Medina is the best in the world at the moment. It has been, if anything, avoided like the Plague, he gets a bit of a wrap here & there, but i feel like everyone is running scared that we are very possibly about to crown our first Brazilian World Surfing Champion. We are also close to seeing the biggest melt down from a world number one since our own Danny Wills & Mick Campbell demolished there own chances at Pipeline in 1998 to miss out on what was a close to certain world title.
I believe that Gabriel Medina will win the world title, I will also not be surprised if the pressure gets the better of him either, but i think he will get there. I believe that John John is the biggest talent & probably surfing the best in the last two months, but seriously, Medina needs a bit of recognition, he is so hard to stop when he is on & he seems to have Kelly’s number, which is three quarters of the battle. Jordy has been on fire too, so things are definitely interesting for Pipe & then come Snapper next year.
So apparently, we have, the best in the world, the best in the world & then the best in the contest jersey. Perhaps this is why Kelly Slater is the undisputed king of surfing, when he wins world titles, or when he has in the past, no one is as good, when he doesn;t win he is still the best, when he gets to old he will be the greatest ever & he already is. Whatever happens, Medina is going to be hard to stop over the next ten years & so is John, it is an actual changing of the guard, the difference is this time, there is a legitimate Brazilian leading the charge, & by the look of the World Juniors in Portugal a few weeks back expect there to be a few more Brazilians & even Europeans leading the charge for titles in coming years!
