Mitch Coleborn takes Five before Volcom Pro Fiji May 31, 2012 – Tags:

As you may have already heard, surfing sensation Mitch Coleborn has been given the wildcard to compete in the Volcom Pro Fiji. Perfect left handers for arguably the worlds most dynamic goofy footer this wildcard is seemingly a no brainer.
I dropped into Coleborn’s place on the Sunny Coast the other morning. Paddling out into the lineup out the front of his house the first wave i saw was Mitch going left, the kid i remember seeing for the first time at Maroochydore all those years ago still has a similar style, strong, yet able to unleash at the drop of a hat, what ensued off the dribbly two foot section was a full rotation forehand punt, one of those ones that only the super kids seem to be able to manage, massive & controlled yet still have a weird kink in it that makes you think maybe they are wearing invisible straps!
Though we are mates i don’t get to hang out with Mitch all that often with all his travel, so a surf & catch up is always good, in which time i am able to ask Mitch about his thoughts for the Volcom Pro Fiji, short & sweet but you get the feeling that his head space is pretty good for the event which he flies to this weekend-

W- Hey Mitch congrats on the wildcard, you seem pretty relaxed having a bit of down time at home before the comp, how you feeling a few days before flying to Fiji?
MC- Really good, no pressure at all going into this one.. i know the waves are going to be amazing, taking a bunch of bigger boards away for the first time since Hawaii so im just more excited to surf good waves more than anything..
W- In my mind your debut contest on the CT has been a long time coming, do you personally feel your ready to be taking on the worlds best competitors?
MC- I feel like my surfing has been up to that level for a while but im still making a bunch of immature/silly mistakes on the qs so i feel like all i have to work out is a little bit of mental stuff, maybe a little more confidence..
W- Being one of the world’s best surfers, you haven’t been able to get on a roll in the QS it would be safe to say, where does that leave you for the contest, go out there & treat it like you are shooting photos or do you think you will take the conservative heat strategy approach?
MC- I have been really conservative heading into the last couple of events and that really hasnt worked out for me.. I feel like the judges want to really see my best surfing to throw big scores.. Not just safety 3 to the beach! Thats my main focus heading into the next couple of comps. Not worrying about what everyone thinks, worrying about falling none of that! Heading in fired up and guns blazing
W-Perfect lefts for a high flying goofy footer such as your self on paper it sounds like a recipe for success, are you thinking in your mind going big & winning the whole thing, or just the old one heat at a time trip?
MC- I couldn’t help but imagining winning the comp as soon as i got the wildcard.. Im just going to take it one heat at a time though really just try and take as much away form the event as possible and enjoy surfing against those guys in some of the worlds best waves! Amping
W- All done, Just a quick one for you today buddy, good luck in the comp & TWS will be behind you all the way when you are over there taking down the world’s best…….
MC- thanks heaps willow those questions were super easy to answer, love your journalism skills!

So there you have it, Mitch Coleborn, one to watch this year at the Volcom Pro Fiji!
