Micheal Peterson Ashes scattered at Kirra April 15, 2012 – Tags:

As you probably already know Surfing Great Micheal Peterson passed away from a heart attack on the Gold Coast recently. Yesterday in a fitting tribute, pro surfers including Mick Fanning and Kelly Slater were part of a paddle out at Kirra Beach to scatter MP’s ashes.
A childhood spent at the beach which eventually turned into 70’s version of surf stardom, Micheal Peterson had the point at Kirra totally wired, when it came to competition MP was unstoppable with his intimidation tactics as documented as the wins themselves. Rabbit Bartholomew, Peter Townend just to name a couple were part of the era that MP owned, his innovation in approaching a wave as well as his visionary board shaping were nothing short of instrumental in the fast tracking of where surfing is today!
If you think that sounds like a big call, then i suggest you read his biography where all is explained, if you are looking for a quicker form of proof, just look at the front cover of the same book to where it is quoted
‘You are better than me MP’ Kelly Slater.
Just as the King Kelly has paved the way for the moves kids are doing today [After Slaters Air in the final of Bells last week i think he might be still paving the way] MP changed the way people surf and look at surfing waves, in turn competition in turn the boards that were surfed!
Micheal Peterson was not a man without vices, he would steal your girlfriend and take as many drugs as you put in front of him which in the end i think destroyed his surfing career as well as other things. The fact remains however, that Micheal Peterson was not only a Pioneer of our sport but an instrumental part of bringing surfing out of the dark ages when it came to performance and equipment, words can’t express how important that has been in the evolution of our sport.
From a guy that never knew you but totally understands the impact you had on the industry we butter our bread with-
See you later MP Rest in Peace you can now rule that Kirra Line up forever!
